Oh. My. Godric.

Hiya guys. I'm alive.
Sorry I've been so AWOL lately, been busy/stressed/generally lethargic for these past few weeks for reasons I shall get to soon.

But first... During these past few weeks I've also been finally catching up with True Blood, but while addictive and entertaining, it didn't manage to really impress me until the last Sunday's episode I Will Rise Up. More about that under the cut. (Note: spoilers only up to 2x09, waiting for 2x10 to download while I sleep)

First of all: GOOOODRIIIIC!!! ;__;

Admittedly there has been some moving stuff and really heavy shit before this, but never before has this trashy, awesomely ridiculous show about Southern vampires and other wacky stuff made me honestly shed tears of genuine emotion.
It seems all it took was a display of epic, 1000-year-old, man love between two Scandinavians - a tiny, angelic-looking Teuton and a strapping 6'4'' Swedish viking - in Swedish on a rooftop at daybreak. Go figure. :p

But in all seriousness, that was incredible. Everything about that final scene was pretty much perfect (okay, those blue flames looked a bit ridiculous) from writing to acting, especially considering they shot it at one take due to the natural sunrise.

All three actors present did a marvelous job, but I think I'm still most impressed by Allan Hyde, this unknown little Danish 19-year-old playing Godric. I mean, how did they find him?! Whoever it was who cast him deserves praise. And probably some award.
Considering how little time we've actually spent with him (he's only appeared in three episodes since that first one when he appeared as the wild, dreadlocked pixie Peter Pan in Eric's viking flashback -- with Peter Franzén, hee), he's made a huge impression, and not only on me. Godric was sort of instantly adored by everyone, which definitely helped sell the "Godric is sort of a BIG DEAL" thing. Especially when it comes to Eric, because from what we've seen of Eric, you really have to be *something* to make him give a damn about you.
Granted, Maker, but we've certainly learned that not all vampires regard their Makers with such reverence. So Hyde really sold both the ethereal, 2000-year-old awesomeness (and I mean awesome in its most basic meaning: causing awe) and badassery and the infinite grace, wisdom, regret and world-weariness. Wow. A 19-year-old with relatively limited acting experience, folks.

Not to say Alexander Skarsgård (bless his crazy hot Swedish acting genius genes) was any less amazing in portraying what Godric meant to Eric. When he fell to his knees and started that anguished begging in Swedish with the blood tears running down his cheeks... He went through it all: denial, anger, despair, reluctant acceptance. This will shake the Machiavellian Viking to his very core. He really kind of lost everything. I'm very interested to see how it will play out.

Eric/Sookie also really sneaked up on me and slapped me in the face (but in a pleasant way if that makes any sense) in this episode, which was really a kind of genius move. I mean, even though I haven't read the books I know they're kind of the twisted, on-off canon OTP in them, and during the past couple of episodes we've seen Sookie gradually warm up to Eric a little bit due to witnessing his devotion to Godric and him showing his softer side and perhaps some genuine care for Sookie as well. But up until now I really hadn't considered them as a real possibility. Just, you know: "Hawt. EW, EVIL! DO NOT WANT!" from Sookie's part and "Hmm, pretty little plaything that could prove useful, I shall enjoy stealing her from Bill." from Eric's.
From the very beginning of the series I haven't really bought the whole Bill/Sookie thing which initially baffled me because I wasn't sure if I was meant to or not because I think it really happened unnaturally fast (yes, sometimes people just instantly click and there are examples in tv shows when that kind of thing works, but here it just felt forced) and also because the much-advertised chemistry just felt lackluster to me (which is especially odd considering Paquin and Moyer are a real-life couple, but then again I have a theory on the whole RL-couples-don't-play-lovers-convincingly thing). Chemistry-wise I could see Sam/Sookie (granted, I have a shapeshifter bias ;)) and Eric/Sookie, heck, basically anything but Bill/Sookie.
But like I said, I was still clueless enough to NOT see this coming.

But then again, maybe that dream sequence was supposed to be surprising and make both Sookie and the audience go "Hmmmmm.....".
Because you know you expected a blood-induced sex dream about Eric to be creepy and porny, or at least some kind of "ravaging Viking" fantasy. And it totally wasn't (okay, voyeur!Lorena and smiley!Eric were a bit creepy). It was actually very tender and awesome and honest, in addition to insanely hot (hello chemistry! I really did not expect that) with all the laughing and gentle snarking and entwined fingers and talking about how they never really knew each other until now. Another shining acting moment for Anna and Alex, and pretty much everything else about that scene was perfect as well. You could tell it wasn't real and that it was a romanticized view (soft golden lighting, perfect tousled bed hair, no fangs or deathly pallor), but it still felt real enough for us to believe that they could be having that kind of pillow talk. Which was, one again, unexpected. Especially for someone unfamiliar with the book canon.

Damn, I want more of that. If only because this was actually the first time I actually felt invested in a love/sex scene in this series instead of being bored/weirded out by or rolling my eyes at them. Probably because, as I said, it wasn't really porny or creepy, or alternatively nauseatingly sugary.
I really don't want to get into any shipping business with this show (Team Eric vs. Team Bill, ack! >_<), but I must admit I'm intrigued, especially if they can handle the storyline in an interesting way. Plus, Bill/Sookie has really started to bore and frustrate me, I already said at the beginning of the season that if I have to sit through yet another endless soft-porn sequence with Sookie and Bill, I will scream.
I have some tentative hope because I would assume right now getting into Sookie's knickers or antagonizing Bill is the farthest possible agenda in Eric's mind (as evidenced by his disinterest in Sookie eyeballing him during Nan Flanagan's verbal smackdown and being all "whatever" at Bill punching him), and Godric's last wish was also for Sookie to look after his distraught father/brother/son which even he dryly acknowledged isn't going to be easy. Like, "I taught him all he knows, sorry you have to deal with that." *chuckle* Oh, Godric. You will be sorely missed. <3

*realizes how much she's already written and what time it is*
Oops, guess I should really put a stop to my gushing even though I could write a lot more. I feel I've only managed to say like 10% of what I wanted to say, and even that feels like it came out wrong. And if that doesn't indicate how impressed I was... *shakes head*

I think you can expect me to not abandon this subject in a while, I'm afraid, even though I do promise I'll get around to talking about the RL stuff as well one of these days. :p

But now I'll leave with a nice tribute to Godric and this great episode. The song fits perfectly somehow:

Goodbye, Godric...

RRRRRRRR, Godric!!!!! I am watching this too, and just like you I was so incredibly impressed by the previous episode. And I LOVE Godric! It's nice to see that I am not the only one hatin' the Bill/Sookie-affair. xD ("Sookie is miine" ARGH!) Usually I end up spending every episode hoping that Eric will show up soon. lol, you should have seen my face the first time he started to chatter in fluent swedish.. xD

I think this () his says it perfectly. xD

But as amusing as I find the TracksuitGangsta!Eric, I really miss his long hair. The wig perhaps looked a bit unnatural, but I hope Alex will grow his own hair longer for the role. Eric is supposed to remind you of a restless, prowling lion, outwardly calm but ready to attack any moment, and with the shorter hair the impression just isn't the same. :/ And also, now he sometimes looks so much like his dad and I really don't want to associate Eric with Bootstrap Bill. xD

Oh, and as for the Swedish... I didn't think it was possible for me to look forward to anyone speaking Swedish. xD I also think it's kind of cute Eric taught his "daughter" to speak it with him.

LOOOOOL! SOOKEEEH!
I just childishly love the fact that they spoke a language I know fluently. (I speak english too, but you know... :-p)
I dunno, I have the hots for Eric real bad, long-haired AND short-haired. I think it's the facial features that does it... Anyway, of course it doesn't hurt that he is really tall and masculine and dangerous, and.. You get the point.. :-p (Am I the only one that gets a huge kick out of seeing Beel trying to be tough standing next to him, when Eric is at least one head taller than him btw? :-p)

No, you're not. xD But I feel sorry for poor Alex because he has to hunch all the time because EVERYONE is shorter than him and therefore he has to talk down to everyone.
